Bowtruckle, Chizpurfle and Porlock

Bowtruckle

The Bowtruckle is a small, insect eating, tree dweller with long sharp fingers (two on each hand), brown eyes, and a general appearance of a flat-faced little stickman made of bark and twigs, which serves well as camouflage in its natural habitat.

The Bowtruckle can be found in western England, southern Germany, and parts of Scandinavia. A Bowtruckle serves as a tree guardian for its home tree, which is usually a tree whose wood makes wands. The twig-like fingers are well adapted for digging out wood lice in trees, and can also be used as a weapon against a foe when aimed at the eyes. It is generally a peaceful creature, but will become violent if anything threatens its tree, or itself. To take leaves or wood from a Bowtruckle's tree, one would have to offer it woodlice or fairy eggs as a distraction.

Chizpurfle

A Chizpurfle is a type of very small parasite. Crab-like in appearance, they are up to a twentieth of an inch with fangs. Magic attracts them and they are commonly found in the fur and feathers of Crups and Augureys.

They attack magical objects like wands and cauldrons, grawing through to the magical core or gorging on the last remnants of potions. In the absence of magic, Chizpurfles attack Muggle electrical items. This explains the curious failing of new electrical goods.

Chizpurfle infestations are usually easily handled by patented potions on the market, but more severe infestations need to be dealt with by the Pest Sub-Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

Porlock

The Porlock is a horse guardian native to England and Southern Ireland. They are small, reaching a height of two feet on average, and covered in a large amount of rough hair. It has a large nose, small arms ending in four stubby fingers, and it walks on two cloven hoofs.

The Porlock guards horses, and lives on grass. It can either be found nesting in the straw of a stable, or in the middle of the herd it is protecting. Porlocks are mistrustful of Humans, and hide at their approach.
